PROSPECTUS OF "THE PORT PHILLIP CHRISTIAN HERALD" - 1845 |

"THE PORT PHILLIP CHRISTIAN HERALD"
It is proposed to issue, on SATURDAY, the 3rd JANUARY, 1846, next, and to continue monthly, a small Periodical, to be devoted to the inculcation of Gospel truth, and the diffusion of Missionary and other religious intelligence. Each Number will open with a discourse or essay on some point of Christian doctrine, or duty, with a special view to the Sabbath reading of those who are at a distance from the ordinary means of grace. This will be followed by Biographical Sketches, Notes on important parts of Church History, Reviews of new Publications, and other Miscellaneous matter; to which will be added, interesting extracts from eminent writers, ancient and modern.
The last division will consist of brief notices of Missionary efforts in all parts of the world, and by all sections of the Christian Church. In this department, an attempt will be made to furnish a Chronicle of all important measures for the extension of Christ's Kingdom, by his Servants of every name.
As the object of the proposed publication will be to build up the people of God in their most Holy Faith, and make known to others the way of Salvation: all controversy will, as far as possible be avoided. Discussions of a merely local, temporary and personal character will be entirely excluded. The conductors wish well to all sections of the Protestant Family, and rejoice in seeing the Lord's work done, whoever they may be that do it. They however disclaim all neutrality in reference to what they regard as Christian truth, and whilst they will study to speak the truth in love, and avoid giving offence unto any, they will neither disguise nor dilute their own sentiments, either to obtain favour, or escape hostility.
Presbyterians themselves, adhering to the principles of the Scottish Reformation, as these are maintained in the present day by the Free Church of Scotland, they will on no occasion conceal those principles, and when they deem it necessary, will expound and enforce them. But whilst thus disclaiming all indifference or neutrality in reference to their own peculiar views: they purpose giving the primary place to the grand principles of the Gospel on which the Churches of the Reformation are agreed. Their desire and endeavour will be to win souls to Christ, not to gain proselytes to a party, for they are aware how easy it is to be zealous for a sect, without being zealous for the cause of God, without being animated by love to Christ.
Such are the views and intentions with which "The Port Phillip Christian Herald" is projected. Should it meet with sufficient encouragement, it will be published regularly on the first Saturday of each month, and will consist of eight pages demy quarto. The price of a single Number will be sixpence. Subscribers paying in advance for six months, if resident in Melbourne, may have the paper left at their houses; if resident in the country, it will be forwarded to them by Post.
Subscribers' names will be received at the "Gazette" Office; by Mr. Pullar, Mr. Clarke, Mr. Pittman, Mr. Maclehose, Booksellers, Melbourne, and Mr. Dowling, Launceston.
